Key Concepts in upstreem
Before you start working with upstreem, it helps to understand the core concepts behind the platform. upstreem is built around a few key signals: how often your brand appears, how prominently it appears, how it is described, which brands compete for attention, which sources influence the answers, and which opportunities can improve your visibility..png?fit=max&auto=format&n=shsni3dymmpqA6BL&q=85&s=d4f1d4ab035736332c4f0a313a750d0d)
Brands
Brands are the companies, products, or competitors that appear in AI Search responses. In upstreem, you choose which brands you want to track. Your own brand and your competitors are analyzed with the same logic, so you can compare Visibility, Rank, Sentiment, mentions, and trends over time. Brands help you answer:Who appears in our market, and how do we compare?upstreem can also surface additional brands that appear frequently but are not yet part of your tracked brand set.\
Visibility
Visibility shows how often your brand is mentioned in relevant AI Search responses. If your brand has 40% Visibility, it means your brand appeared in 40% of the analyzed responses within the selected filters. Visibility helps you answer:Are we part of the conversation?A high Visibility means your brand is frequently present. A low Visibility means AI Search often answers relevant questions without mentioning your brand.\
Rank
Rank shows how prominently your brand appears when it is mentioned. A lower Rank is better. Rank #1 means your brand appeared as the first or most prominent brand in the response. A higher Rank means your brand was mentioned later or less prominently. Rank helps you answer:When we are mentioned, how strong is our position? This matters because being mentioned is not always enough. A brand that appears early in the answer usually has a stronger presence than a brand that is only mentioned briefly near the end.\
Sentiment
Sentiment shows how positively or negatively your brand is described. It helps you understand the quality of your visibility. A brand can appear often, but still be described in a neutral, weak, or negative way. Sentiment helps you answer:Are we being described in a positive way? This is especially useful when comparing your brand with competitors. Sometimes a competitor may have similar Visibility, but a stronger Sentiment.

Citations
Citations are the sources that influence AI Search responses. These can be articles, comparison pages, directories, product pages, videos, community discussions, or other URLs. upstreem analyzes both domains and individual URLs, so you can see which sources are shaping the answers in your market. Citations help you answer:Which sources influence what AI Search says? This is important because citations often explain why some brands appear more often than others. If a source is frequently used and your competitors are mentioned there, but your brand is missing, that source may become a clear opportunity.

Opportunities
Opportunities are recommendations created by upstreem to help you improve your AI visibility. They connect the data from prompts, responses, brands, and citations with concrete next steps. Examples include:- improving existing content
- getting listed on influential sources
- creating matching content based on high-performing pages
- building presence on community or UGC platforms
What should we improve next? This is where upstreem moves from analysis to action. Instead of only showing what is happening, Opportunities help you decide where to focus your work.
